چکیده

M. Lacey and C. Thiele proved in [26] (Annals of Math. (1997)) and [27] (Annals of Math. (1999)) that the bilinear Hilbert transform maps L1 × L2 → L boundedly when 1 p1 + 1 p2 = 1 p with 1 < p1, p2 ≤ ∞ and 2 3 < p < ∞. Whether the L estimates hold in the range p ∈ (1/2, 2/3] has remained an open problem since then. In this paper, we prove that the bilinear Hilbert transform does not satisfy any L estimates for p ∈ (1/2, 2/3) (Theorem 1.2). Nevertheless, we can establish L estimates for the bilinear Fourier multipliers whose symbols are not identical to but arbitrarily close to that of the bilinear Hilbert transform in the full range p ∈ (1/2,∞) (Theorem 1.3).

The Solution of Boen's Problem

A number of authors have proved special cases of Ci as well as special cases of more general propositions [l, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8] . Both Ci and all of the generalizations of it which have been considered in the literature follow from Theorem 1 which appears below. In [2] it is observed that if P is a smallest counterexample to Ci, then there is associated with P , an anticommutative (not necessar...

A Geometric Approach to the Two-dimensional Jacobian Conjecture

Suppose f(x, y), g(x, y) are two polynomials with complex coefficients. The classical Jacobian Conjecture (due to Keller) asserts the following. Conjecture. (Jacobian Conjecture in dimension two) If the Jacobian of the pair (f, g) is a non-zero constant, then the map (x, y) 7→ (f(x, y), g(x, y)) is invertible. Note that the opposite is clearly true, because the Jacobian of any polynomial map is...

Hempel and the Flagpole

A standard counterexample to Hempel’s Deductive-Nomological (D-N) model of explanation is the example of the flagpole and its shadow. In this example, it is shown that the DN model allows one to explain the height of a flagpole by reference to the length of its shadow (in conjunction with other background premises). Because this seems intuitively unacceptable as an explanation, this example is ...

On the Classification of Cyclic Hadamard Sequences

Binary sequences with two-level periodic correlation correspond directly to cyclic (v, k, λ)-designs. When v = 4t−1, k = 2t−1, and λ = t−1, for some positive integer t, the sequence (or design) is called a cyclic Hadamard sequence (or design). For all known examples, v is either a prime number, a product of twin primes, or one less than a power of 2. Except when v = 2k−1, all known examples are...

Large Cardinals and Definable Counterexamples to the Continuum Hypothesis

In this paper we consider whether L(R) has “enough information” to contain a counterexample to the continuum hypothesis. We believe this question provides deep insight into the difficulties surrounding the continuum hypothesis. We show sufficient conditions for L(R) not to contain such a counterexample. Along the way we establish many results about non-stationary towers, non-reflecting stationa...
